Review by Sami Kelsh

Ten years on since Doctor Who first returned to our televisions, the Ninth Doctor and his friends are continuing their adventures in comic form. Weapons Of Past Destruction, written by Cavan Scott with art by Blair Shedd, reunites us with precious Nine, Rose, and Jack Harkness in a new story set between the televisual stories The Doctor Dances and Boom Town.

One does wonder at what point in his life The Doctor will actually stop expecting a pleasant trip to someplace nice not to end in unpleasant surprise and disaster: the Time Lord’s idyllic descriptions of the planet Excroth prove wildly inaccurate as the team find themselves the guests/prisoners of some big angry robots known as the Lect, who appear to be engaged in battle with the Unon, giant metal space-centaurs engaged in attacking the Lect ship.

In spite of their best efforts (which, admittedly, aren’t very good), The Doctor and friends find themselves embroiled in this conflict – and while they attempt to make good their exit, Rose finds herself stuck outside the TARDIS in the midst of escalating explosions.

But there are some mysterious time-related issues aplenty in this adventure, and I’m sure we’ll find out just what the heck happened to the nice planet they were meant to have been visiting as the tale unfolds.

This first instalment does a good job of capturing the essence of this TARDIS team – though I do hope that Rose has more to do beyond asking exposition-y questions next time round, now that she’s been separated from The Doctor and Jack, and in possession of a curious piece of jewellery which seems to protect its wearer.

The art is joyously faithful to the 2005 Doctor Who aesthetic, and the comic as a whole is a welcome reminder of the brimming enthusiasm and fun of that first revived series. And if I’m honest, they had me at giant metal space-centaurs.
